Developing Personal Learning Networks/Environments for Staff and Library Users

Competency: Learning and Innovation
Sub-Category: Manages the development of one’s own learning and ongoing improvement of skills and knowledge

Informal learning indisputably plays a large role in lifelong learning efforts, and there are plenty of ways we can support those informal opportunities. Learners, for example, benefit tremendously through the creation and nurturing of personal learning networks and personal learning environments—those flexible and constantly-evolving sets of people and resources that we turn to for help in meeting our just-in-time learning needs.

We will, through this one-hour interactive session, explore how personal learning networks and environments can be created and sustained, and will explore examples of personal learning networks and environments to see how we can support them for library staff and library users.

Participants, by the time they leave the session, will be able to:

  • Define and identify key characteristics of personal learning networks and personal learning environments
  • Cite at least three resources that can be used immediately to create and support personal learning networks and personal learning environments
  • Identify at least two actions that can be taken immediately in their workplaces to support personal learning networks or personal learning environments
