Creating a Circulating Toy Collection: From Concept to Implementation

Play. We all know how important play is to learning development and
pre-literacy skills. In this interactive and informative presentation, we’ll
discuss the choices we made in developing and launching a
successful education-based toy collection that is not just a fad or a
temporary attention-grabber, but an enduring collection with long-
term community benefits.

To demonstrate a full understanding, we will be presenting both the
frontline (branch manager) and the backroom (collection manager)
perspective and experience. We will also show how this collection
directly ties into the mission of the library and represents a unique
way of extending that mission to promote early literacy.

Attendees will:

• Be able to develop a toy collection using the model presented
• Be able to choose toys that meet customer needs and safety
guidelines
• Understand the mechanics of circulating toys, including how to
train staff and successfully publicize this special collection
