PCI Webinar with Rachael Altman

Using Curiosity and Transferable Skills To Guide Your Career Path

Thursday, February 20th from 10:30-11:30am EST

Competency: Professional Development
Sub-Category: Plans for and supports career development opportunities

The librarian, or information professional, skill set is highly transferable and applicable in the rapidly changing information job market. There are many opportunities within corporations, law firms, museums, and universities that allow librarians to utilize their skills in non-traditional “library” careers (i.e. outside of academic, public, and school libraries). Any company that deals with information has a need for information professionals (whether they realize it or not), and every company deals with information.

The short of it is that librarians hold the necessary skills and knowledge to transition between public libraries and academia to the corporate or legal sector. Learn how your transferable skills, traits, and knowledge are valuable outside of the world of libraries – and how the greatest strategy for career success may be using what is already known.

Attendees will learn how to:

• Recognize the core skills of an information professional
• Market and highlight the information professional skill set
• Acknowledge the variety of ‘librarian’ job titles and descriptions
• Perform a skills audit
