Public Libraries and the Common Core Curriculum: Overview & Resources

What do the new Common Core State Standards mean for public libraries?

• How can you help students and their parents understand the Common Core standards and find resources related to the standards?
• How can you strengthen your collections and programs to meet the Common Core-related needs of children, teens, parents, and educators?

The Common Core State Standards put a new emphasis on close reading, nonfiction, primary sources, and text complexity measured in part by reading formulas. Parents and even educators are still trying to figure out what the impact will be on children and teens. The public library can play a role in helping parents and educators understand the standards and find related resources.

The standards present public libraries with a great opportunity to highlight their nonfiction collection and help students with databases and other sources of primary documents. Along with the new standards comes a renewed emphasis on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), which public librarians can integrate into their programs and book promotion.

In this webinar, participants will gain a general understanding of the Common Core standards that address reading, writing, and speaking. The webinar will give ideas for helping parents and educators understand the standards, and helping students find useful resources. It will emphasize how to use and strengthen current collections and programming to support Common Core.
