UNDERSTANDING YOURSELF AS A FOLLOWER

Competency: Leadership
Sub-Category: Empowers others to take ownership in decision-making and problem-solving

Leaders need followers, and followers need leaders; moreover, in today’s world we must move skillfully from followership to leadership roles and vice-versa depending on context. That said, there’s a two-fold challenge to fulfilling followership responsibilities: one, overcoming the perception of followership as secondary position and thus not being a leader; and two, knowing how to be an effective follower.

In this interactive session we’ll probe the meaning of followership and how you can incorporate this understanding into your work.

Understanding ourselves as followers will increase our effectiveness and positively impact staff members and patrons. In turn, it will help us to be better leaders when we assume that role.

In this session, we will cover important information on:

Becoming aware of our own personality and work style, and how they affect our followership;

  • Identifying key attributes of effective followers; and
  • Implementing best practices of followership in our work as followers and leaders.
