The Rhythm is Going to Get You: Using Music in Library Programs for Children

Competency: Children’s Services
Sub-Category: Designs, implements, and sponsors library programs that offer information, special skills or entertainment for children and their families and caregivers

Music ignites a variety of neural pathways in the brain. For children, music is both fun and a key to literacy development: intellectual, social and emotional skills, motor, language, and overall literacy.

Exposure to music during childhood helps develop sound and phonetic awareness, as well as contextual meaning. Dancing and other gross motor movement, when paired with music, help children build motor skills while allowing them to practice self-expression.

Language development, rhyming, and the ability to pick out the smaller sounds in words are just a few of the benefits of incorporating songs and singing in your storytime. Plus, it’s so much fun!

In this interactive webinar program, Jill Burket Ragase will give you a variety of tools that you will be able to use to:

  • Incorporate current research to select songs and accompanying activities that enhance literacy building skills
  • Select songs, playlists, movements and games to encourage gross motor skills.
  • Strategies to create and deliver programs that allow children to continue skill building beyond library based programs

Whether you are a seasoned veteran looking to refresh your offerings or a rookie not sure where to start, we will move beyond the research, providing participants with program ideas, playlists, and resources to expand the role of music in programming for children of all ages.
