Public Speaking Pointers for Librarians
Competency: Personal/Interpersonal Skills
Sub-Category: Communicates the value of library services, products and policies to library management, library staff, key stakeholders, user groups and the community
Almost all librarians have to speak in public. Whether you speak to a rug full of pre-schoolers at storytime, or a classroom full of students for an information literacy session, or your board at their monthly meeting, you will speak in public.
Do you always feel ready? Probably, not.
We will address some of the real basics of public speaking, including preparation, knowing your audience, how to use a microphone, what do wear, what NOT to do. Don’t you wish they had covered this in library school? Please come prepared with your own suggestions (or horror stories) to share so that we can all learn.
