Secrets of the Catalog: Basics for Non-Catalog Users

Have you ever wondered how library data impacts what we see in a record? In this session, we’ll explore the interaction between the OPAC and MARC Records. Are you looking for search strategies & tips? This inside look at the catalog is a resource for everyone who wants to improve their search strategies.
In this interactive and informative program, attendees will:
- gain an understanding of the relationship between data of the library catalog and the public interface
- be identify basic areas of information in a MARC record
- explore search strategies from a MARC data viewpoint
- enhance their public services skills through a deeper understanding of the library catalog
Audience: All library staff at all levels; no knowledge of MARC or coding is needed.
Robin Fay – Biography
Robin Fay has served as a librarian for many years with progressive responsibilities and leadership (Librarian IV: University of Georgia), she has been involved in technology and programming since the early 2000s. As the only girl in the first programming class in my high school, her interest in technology continues to this day.
Robin has over 10 years’ experience in teaching/training focused on developing high quality learner-centered training programs built on a strong understanding of online learning environments, pedagogies, and best practices. Training has included writing curricula, creating content and tutorials, and teaching online and face-to-face to library and IT staff ranging from public libraries to academic institutions.
